About The Egyptian Exchange (EGX)
The Egyptian Exchange (EGX), formerly Cairo & Alexandria Stock Exchanges (CASE), dates back to more than 125 years. Operating through two locations, the Alexandria Stock Exchange was officially established in 1883, followed by Cairo Stock Exchange in 1903. In 1997, the Presidential Decree No. 51/1997, re-defined the legal structure of the Exchanges and since then both Exchanges were managed by one Chairman and the same Board of Directors.
EGX, the Premier market in the MENA Region that best serves its stakeholders, provides leading edge technology infrastructure, innovative products as well as a reliable, liquid and efficient market place. A strong core of diversified sectors, coupled with competitive fees, tax-free regime, along with ease of entry enabled the Exchange to attract all types of investors (domestic, foreign, institutional and retail).
EGX is continuously harmonizing its listing, membership and trading rules and regulations according to international standards, to ensure a proper cohesive regulatory framework that best protects investors.
EGX has upgraded its trading platform in October 2008 to the globally recognized software NASDAQ OMX "X-Stream" solution, offering a reliable and robust platform dealing in multiple product classes including equities, debt, ETFs, futures and options, and paving the way for linking and integration with other exchanges using the same platform.
EGX is currently a Board member of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) and presides over the African Securities Exchanges Association (ASEA). EGX is also a founder member of the Union of Arab Exchanges, a member of the Federation of Euro Asian Stock Exchanges and an affiliate member of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).
Financial and Investor Education Program Profile:
EGX offers extensive educational programs for university students, through its annual Borsa Step x Step forum and exhibition, providing them with the basics of investment & trading on the stock market. In that respect, around 25 thousand investors, covering several governorates in Egypt, have been addressed since Year 2005.
Furthermore, to ensure proper disclosure of information and transparency, EGX started its educational sessions to the Press in November 2008, covering EGX trading rules and mechanism, together with professional business writing.
EGX has also renewed Borsa Step x Step website to include all the new educational programs, provided by EGX, as well as all Borsa Step X Step Forum’s schedules, news, and subscription procedures.
To further remove any misconceptions and to better understand the various risks associated with different types of investments, EGX has conducted a project called “Pay You a Visit”, which is a service offered by EGX, free of charge, to any company or a group that consists of not less than 100 people, through an educational seminar for one-two days, about the basics of investment in the stock market. EGX brings along all its experts in the field as well as all educational publications needed to raise awareness about capital market investment.
From another perspective, EGX has introduced an advanced version of Stock Riders game which is a simulation for trading in the Egyptian Stock Exchange which aims to educate students or any other interested party about investment fundamentals in an easy, simple way including all market participants (investors – banks – mutual funds – stock exchange), replicating a real-life trading environment. Stock Riders Group Program, visited different universities and clubs during this year.
Educational brochures are periodically published about the basics of investment and the financial instruments available in the capital market and whenever a new tool or product is introduced in the market.
