About IFIE

The International Forum for Investor Education is a global network of organizations committed to building stronger, more resilient economies through improved financial literacy and investor education programs at the local level.

Our mission is to unite and engage global organizations across sectors to help improve financial capability and investor education.

We recognize that processes and goals for individual investors vary widely across regions, so our financial literacy and investor education activities are designed to respond to the needs of specific communities. By applying global expertise to local action, we can empower families to invest and spend their money wisely, which can help build more resilient markets and economies for everyone.

IFIE grew out of the activities of the Working Group on Investor Education, established by the International Council of Securities Associations (ICSA). The members of this Working Group, who would ultimately become the founding members of IFIE, drafted ICSA's Principles and Best Practices for Investor Education, the first global set of standards for providers of investor education, in early 2004. IFIE was subsequently established as an independent organization in early 2005 with founding members from Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, the UK and the US. Today, IFIE continues its focus on strengthening resources to implement Financial Capability/Investor Education programs and strategies working together with members, partners and stakeholders across sectors and across jurisdictions.

Key Principles

The publication and promotion of global standards for best practices in investor education

The exchange and distribution of information and ideas among providers of investor education operating in different jurisdictions

The establishment, growth, and improved effectiveness of comprehensive investor education programs

Core Activities

Meetings, Conferences, and Training Seminars

Meetings, annual conferences, and virtual working groups offer members opportunities to build networks share knowledge, and solve problems with financial capability and investment educators from around the world. By facilitating these discussions, IFIE helps local educators improve the content, delivery method, and evaluation tools for their programs. Specifically, we focus on programs that:

  • Intend to improve individuals’ ability to be financially resilient and manage their resources and consumers’ understanding of investments and the investment process in external financial markets;
  • Address existing and emerging needs and challenges on the ground for the range of sectors engaged in implementing financial capability/investor education programs, such as securities regulators, Self-Regulatory Organizations (SROs), central banks, exchanges, funders, non-profit organizations, networks of organizations engaged in the financial markets ecosystem, etc; and
  • Focus on financial capability and investor education programs and challenges in the context of all markets and levels, including in the context of needs of Growth and Emerging Market (GEM) jurisdictions.

Standards and Best Practices for Implementation of Financial Capability and Investor Education Programs and Strategies

Recognizing the importance of developing and promulgating Best Practices in the field, IFIE drew on professionals from the government, NPO, regulatory, and private sectors to develop a new global Code of Practice for financial capability/investor education. By facilitating collaboration between professionals across sectors and jurisdictions, IFIE can respond to evolving market circumstances as well as the needs of individual communities.

Endorsement of the IFIE Code of Practice is a prerequisite for Membership, and signifies that the Member adheres to these high standards in the development and execution of their financial capability and investor education programs and strategies.

Practical How-To Information, Surveys and Resources for Practitioners

IFIE works to develop resources with members and partners related to the trends and developments in this field. For example, in order to track global trends in investor education programs, the annual IFIE State of Global Investor Education Survey analyses demographic, delivery, and evaluation methods used by investor education and financial capability programs around the world and shares the results with members and partners. IFIE also has launched an initiative to develop a financial capability/investor education toolkit to assist with implementation of programs and strategies.
